Dr Julian Godlee (BSc MBBChir DRCOG MRCGP)  has been working as a Facial Aesthetics practitioner for over fourteen years and has many loyal and regular patients at his discrete, private clinic in the beautiful Hertfordshire village of Benington near Hertford, Ware and Welwyn.

Dr Godlee strongly believes that Botox injections require significant skill, and should be performed only by practitioners who have proven commitment and experience, and believes that the ‘botox party’ has done considerable damage to the reputation of Botulinum toxin in public opinion. He is keen that injections take place in a clinical setting, under clinical supervision, with all the care that is routinely devoted to more conventional surgical specialities.

Botulinum toxin, when used judiciously and carefully, can produce marked benefit not only as a treatment of facial lines, but, when used regularly, can also act as a truly preventative agent, to protect against long term skin changes. Dr Godlee has published works on the benefits of Botulinum toxin, and has experience of the benefits shown when treating only one of identical twin sisters.

Appointments are usually 30 minutes. Ice is used for topical anaesthesia. Your comfort, your full understanding of the procedure, and your ultimate satisfaction are the pillars on which this successful practice is based.

Botox injections to reduce facial wrinkles

As we age, we begin to lose the collagen, elastic fibres and fat in the dermal layer of our skin – the things we need to keep our skin plump and taut. As a result, the skin begins to lose its elasticity and begins to sag, and that’s when wrinkles start to appear.

The ageing process can be exacerbated by external factors such as exposure to too much sun, smoking and yo-yo dieting.

We also unintentionally create lines on our faces by the way we use our muscles. Crow’s feet may sometimes be called laughter lines, but they can also be caused by squinting from the sun or through short-sightedness. Frowning encourages lines to form on our foreheads or between the eyebrows.

Why do people ask for Botox®?

One of the most popular facial aesthetic treatments at the Cutting Hill Clinic is Botox® which is always carried out after a full consultation.

The main ingredient of Botox® is clostridium botulinum which works by freezing the muscle it’s injected into. When the muscle stops working, the skin covering it appears smoother and therefore younger.

Botox® was developed for medical uses, and its aesthetic benefits were discovered more or less by accident. It is commonly used medically for conditions such as excessive sweating, migraine, MS and muscle spasms, Bell’s palsy, squints, blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking) and urinary incontinence.

Benefits

  • Reduces crow’s feet by weakening the muscles responsible for squinting and crinkling of the eye area.
  • Reduces frown lines and deep furrows between the brows – this makes it a popular treatment for men.
  • Reduces wrinkles on the forehead which smooths the forehead resulting in younger-looking skin.
  • Few side-effects – the main side-effect of Botox® is its greatest asset – that it restricts the movement of the muscle. You may experience a little bruising at the injection site, but that is always temporary. There are other, much rarer side-effects but our doctor will discuss them with you at length before your treatment.

Botox injections are a temporary solution for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles. The effects of the injections lasts from three to six months. You will need to have injections about two to three times a year. The early clinical studies indicate that the duration of treatment benefits is increased over time so that you should require injections less frequently in the future. Also, the duration of the Botox effect varies from patient to patient and may be less effective for those over 65 years of age.

Botox blocks impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines. Botox relaxes the muscles so they do not contract. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected.

Cosmetic denervation with Botox is a simple and safe procedure. Using a tiny micro-needle, a very small amount of Botox is injected, very precisely, into several locations on the face. Because the needle is so fine and only a small amount of liquid is used, the discomfort associated with the injections is minimal. No sedation or local anaesthetic is required, and you can resume normal activities immediately.

Potential side effects: Temporary bruising is the most common side effect. In rare cases, there can be a drooping of an eyelid or asymmetry of facial expression. The risk of any side effect depends on the muscles injected. Your doctor will discuss this with you in length before your treatment. Because the effects of Botox are completely reversible, any side effects should be temporary, lasting only a few weeks.
